What is business travel insurance?
Business travel insurance is a type of optional cover you can add to a standard travel insurance policy to adapt your cover for business travel. It’s specifically for travellers going abroad for business purposes.
As well as covering all of the standard features of a basic travel insurance policy, business travel insurance goes the extra mile to offer special cover for business essentials, such as company money, schedule changes, and business equipment. It will protect the essentials for your business activities abroad so travel disruptions don’t ruin your plans.
What is the best business trip travel insurance policy?
The best insurance policy is one that covers your specific needs. So whether you need specialised cover for business equipment, additional medical cover, or even just alternative travel arrangements, you can find a policy that gives you peace of mind. Look for policies that offer comprehensive benefits and that start at the right time. Policies for travel insurance for business can vary. It’s important to shop around and compare multiple quotes to find the best solution for your needs.
Single trip business travel insurance
Single trip insurance is beneficial when you need to customise your cover. It can cater to the nature of your business and for specific locations, whether local or international. Single-trip insurance typically offers comprehensive coverage and flexibility in terms of trip duration. It’s an ideal option if you only plan to take one business trip in a year. If you’re planning more regular trips, multi-trip insurance or annual business insurance would likely be more cost-effective.
Annual multi trip travel insurance for business travel
This type of policy is similar to single trip business travel insurance, but it covers multiple trips in one year with a single policy. It reduces the amount of administration for each trip and may be more cost-effective. Annual multi-trip business travel insurance can be updated during a year and you can add additional coverage for specific trips where needed.
Worldwide business travel insurance
Travel insurance for business can be customised to suit the locations you’ll be travelling to. You can choose a policy that covers local UK travel, European travel cover, or worldwide travel. You can even choose a worldwide cover that excludes destinations like the USA, Canada and Mexico. Naturally, the cost will vary depending on the risks of the country.
Business travel insurance for people with existing medical conditions
Most insurance policies exclude cover for pre-existing conditions. So if you have existing medical needs, you’ll have to take out specialised travel insurance with pre-existing conditions cover. It’s important to declare all of your pre-existing conditions when purchasing insurance of any kind. Failing to do so could cause problems if you need to claim.
Group travel insurance policies for businesses
Group travel insurance is a cost-effective solution for companies with multiple travelling employees. Group policies are designed to provide comprehensive cover for employees travelling together for business purposes. It covers a wide range of risks including delayed or cancelled flights, medical emergencies and lost or stolen luggage. Coverage limits are usually higher for groups and may cover those with pre-existing medical conditions too. Some policies may offer additional benefits for leisure activities and accompanying family members.
How can I get cheap business travel insurance?
To find cheap travel insurance with business coverage, it’s important to compare multiple policies before you buy. That’s because not all policies are the same. Some insurers may offer more benefits than others for risks that are specific to your situation. Comparing quotes increases your odds of finding cheaper insurance. You can also opt for an annual multi-trip policy if you travel a lot, and group policies may offer a cost advantage. Always ask about available discounts when requesting quotes. Another way to cut costs is to opt for a higher excess amount. This will increase your risks, but your premiums will be lower.
What does business travel insurance cover?
What’s covered
Business equipment and personal belongings: As well as protecting your personal baggage from theft or damage, business travel insurance cover will protect your important business equipment as well. This can include laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other essentials
Schedule changes: Changes in your meeting schedule can require changes in your travel plans as well, which can be expensive. Travel insurance will help you cover the cost of readjusting your travel plans if there are emergency changes in your work schedule
Replacement cover: If an emergency prevents you from following through with your plans, this protection will cover the cost of sending a replacement employee to cover you
Business money: Unlike a standard travel insurance policy, business travel insurance policies can cover large sums of money that you may need to take with you for business purposes
Medical fees: Business travel insurance, like standard travel insurance, will cover the cost of emergency medical fees while you’re abroad
What’s not covered?
Drugs and alcohol: Neither standard nor business travel insurance will cover incidents where you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol
Personal valuables: Business travel insurance may cover higher-value items if they are essential for business but policies are unlikely to cover valuable personal items. To insure expensive jewellery or personal gadgets, you will need to pay extra for an add-on cover
Travelling against FCDO advice: You will not be covered for destinations that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised against travelling to
Undisclosed health conditions: If you don’t disclose your pre-existing conditions to your provider, you won’t be able to claim cover for those conditions while you travel. You may even invalidate your policy by hiding your health conditions
Poor time management: Your policy won’t cover you if you miss your flight or fail to stick to your travel plans because you didn’t manage your time or were running late
Types of business travel policy
There are several different types of travel insurance to choose from to suit your needs:

Single trip travel insurance
This policy will cover you for a single trip abroad. Your policy will end on a set date (usually the date you plan to return home) and a new policy will need to be taken out if you want cover to continue

Annual Travel Insurance
If you plan to take multiple business trips abroad during the year, this policy will cover all of them. Your policy lasts for a whole year and will cover all of your travel during this time, although per-trip limits apply

Long Stay Travel Cover
Long-stay policies can cover long, single trips that last up to 18 months. Multi-trip policies have limits to the length of each trip, so if you plan to spend a long time abroad for business, this may be the better option

Group Travel Cover
This cover will insure multiple people under the same policy, making travel insurance easier to manage for multiple people. This may be useful if you plan to travel with employees or co-workers
Where can I travel to on a business travel insurance policy?
A travel insurance policy doesn’t automatically cover you for travel anywhere. Insurers give you options for which countries you want your policy to cover. Travel insurance policies that cover fewer destinations tend to be cheaper, but they won’t give you receive any protection if you visit a destination that your policy doesn’t cover.
These are the common destination options you will have to choose from when you take out business travel insurance:

Europe only cover
European policies are the least expensive option and will cover you for travel to all EU countries as well as some non-EU countries, including destinations, such as Turkey and Egypt

Excluding the USA, Canada, and the Caribbean
This policy covers most destinations except USA, Canada, and the Caribbean because medical fees can be especially high in these countries

Worldwide
Worldwide cover gives you global cover. Depending on the terms of your policy some exclusions may apply, including destinations that the FCDO have advised against travelling to
