What does FIV actually mean for a cat's quality of life?

I'm considering adopting a cat who's FIV positive, but I'm terrified by what I've read online. Some sources make it sound like a death sentence, others say it's manageable. What's the reality? Will this cat have a normal lifespan? What precautions do I actually need to take?

Please don’t let FIV scare you off. It’s more like having a slightly weaker immune system, not a terminal illness.
