How do you know if a cat’s personality will actually match your lifestyle?
At the shelter, every cat seemed sweet in their little enclosures, but I know behavior can change at home. I live in a small apartment and work long hours, so I want a cat that’s more independent. But how do you tell at adoption time whether a cat will be clingy or chill once they settle in?

Shelter staffs are your best bet. They usually spend a lot of time with the cats and can tell you which ones are more independent or needy. Ask how each cat behaves when volunteers aren’t around, which will help you know their true personality.
