Can I trust my cats to return home if I let them…

Question · open discussion

Can I trust my cats to return home if I let them explore beyond the garden? Will they remember where home is? Any advice would really help!
I recently started letting my indoor cats explore the garden using a harness. Now they want to wander farther, and I'm scared they might not come back

I understand your fear it’s a big step! I’ve transitioned two indoor cats to outdoor access. What helped was starting slow, like you’re already doing with the harness. After a few weeks, I started letting them off-leash for short periods while I supervised.

Eventually, they became more confident, and yes, they always came back. Cats have a strong homing instinct, especially if they associate your house with food, safety, and love.

You can reinforce this by feeding them at the same time and calling them back with treats or a bell. But make sure they’re microchipped and vaccinated just in case.

If you are too anxious, consider building a "catio" or fenced space, which gives them freedom with boundaries.
