Had a plan for two weeks in Thailand, ended up in Laos instead
I'm a planner, spreadsheets, booked accommodation, and detailed itineraries. Then I met travellers in Bangkok who were heading to Laos and wouldn't stop raving about it.
On impulse, I cancelled my entire Thailand itinerary (lost some money on non-refundable bookings), bought a bus ticket to Vientiane, and just went with them.
Spent two weeks in Laos instead. Tubing in Vang Vieng, sunrise at Kuang Si Falls, slow boat down the Mekong, temples in Luang Prabang. None of it was planned.
I've learned that rigid itineraries often mean missing the best parts of travel - the unexpected detours, the recommendations from people who just came from somewhere amazing, the flexibility to follow opportunities as they arise.
Now I book the first few days and leave everything else open. It's more expensive sometimes (last-minute bookings cost more), but the spontaneity is worth it.
