Travel scams I've encountered (And you shouldn’t fall for)

  • Taxi "meter is broken": suddenly fare is 5x normal. Always agree on price BEFORE getting in, or use Uber or an equivalent in the country you are in.

  • Fake police: show me your wallet for a drug check = pickpocket. Real cops don't do random street checks.

  • Closed today" temple scam: tuk-tuk driver says temple is closed, offers to take you shopping instead (where he gets commission). The temple is open. He's lying.

  • Free bracelet/flower: someone puts it on your wrist, then demands money. Don't let anyone put anything on you.

  • Wrong change: you pay with a large bill, and they give change for a smaller bill. Always count your change immediately.

  • Distraction theft: one person asks for directions/help while their partner pickpockets you. Stay aware of your surroundings.

  • Fake hotel bookings: phishing emails that look like booking.com but steal your card info. Always verify URLs. Trust your gut if it feels weird.
