I took a 6-month career break to travel

Everyone talks about taking time off to travel, but nobody mentions how difficult it is to come back and restart your career.

The traveling part was incredible. Six months through Asia and South America, life-changing experiences, all that. But coming home unemployed with a gap in my CV made me rethink my choices.

Recruiters kept asking what I'd been doing, and traveling doesn't sound like a valid answer in interviews. I ended up framing it as "taking time for personal development," which felt ridiculous but worked better.

Financially, I'd saved enough for the trip but not for the 3-month job search afterwards. I burned through my savings and ended up taking a job I didn't really want just to pay rent. The trip was worth it, but I wish I'd planned the return better.

If you're considering a career break for travel, save more than you think you need. Plan for at least 3 months of unemployment after. Have a career reentry strategy, not just a travel itinerary. And maybe keep some freelance work going during your trip so you don't have a complete gap.
