10 Commands Every Dog Should Know by Heart
Training your dog isn’t just about teaching tricks, it’s about safety, communication, and building trust. Whether your dog is young or old, big or small, there are a few basic commands that every dog should know by heart. These ten can make your life easier and your dog’s life safer and more enjoyable:
1. "Sit" -The classic starting point. It teaches your dog patience and is useful in nearly every situation, before meals, during walks, or meeting new people.
2. "Stay"- This command helps with impulse control. Whether you're crossing a street or answering the door, “stay” keeps your dog safe and still.
3. "Come"- Probably the most important command. A reliable “come” can save your dog’s life if they’re off-leash or heading toward danger.
4. "Down" This one’s great for calming hyper dogs or keeping them from jumping on guests. It also helps in public settings like cafes or parks.
5. "Leave it"- Whether it’s food on the ground, a sharp object, or another animal, this command can stop your dog from getting into trouble.
6. "Drop it"- Ever had to wrestle a sock, toy, or mystery object out of your dog’s mouth? “Drop it” helps you avoid a struggle and possibly a vet visit.
7. "Heel"- Walking calmly beside you without pulling is a game-changer. It makes daily walks more enjoyable and keeps your dog close in busy areas.
8. "Wait"- Different from “stay,” this is about brief pauses, before eating, exiting a door, or getting out of the car.
9. "Off"- Useful for furniture, people, or even counters. “Off” helps create boundaries while still being gentle.
10. "Watch me"- This command helps your dog focus on you, especially in distracting environments. It builds eye contact and strengthens your connection. Training takes time, but the reward is a dog that listens, trusts, and feels confident with you. Start slow, be patient, and celebrate every win, your dog wants to please you.
