The day I realised my dog wasn’t trying to be difficult; he was just scared

Max used to bark at every visitor, growl when touched too suddenly, and hide behind furniture during storms. I thought he was just difficult. Then I learned about fear-based behaviour in dogs. I stopped forcing him into situations. Instead, I started using calming signals, soft voices, treats, and space. He started coming to me on his own. The growls faded. He even sat by the window during the last storm.

The biggest lesson? Fear isn’t disobedience. It’s a plea for understanding. When I changed how I responded to his fear, he changed too.

This really hits home. So many dogs are misunderstood when they’re actually just overwhelmed. Recognizing fear as communication instead of defiance can change everything. Max is lucky to have someone who took the time to listen and adjust.
