How to Keep Your Dog Calm During Storms
Storms can turn even the bravest dog into a trembling mess. The thunder, wind, and flashing lights can be overwhelming. But there are simple ways to help your dog feel safe. First, create a calm space.
Choose a room without windows or loud echoes. Add a cozy bed, blankets, and maybe an old T-shirt that smells like you. Some dogs love hiding under furniture, let them if it helps. Next, drown out the storm.
Play calming music or white noise. It doesn’t need to be loud, just enough to mask the booms and rumbles outside. Use natural calming aids if needed. Pheromone sprays, calming treats, or anxiety wraps like the ThunderShirt can make a huge difference. Just test them before the storm, so your dog doesn’t associate them with fear. Your energy also matters.
If you fuss too much, your dog may think the fear is justified. Instead, act normal, speak softly, and offer comfort without overdoing it. And remember, practice helps.
Try desensitising your dog to storm sounds by playing them softly and rewarding calm behaviour. Over time, storms won’t feel so scary.
