5 Things You Need to Know Before Getting a Pet Rabbit
If you’re thinking of welcoming a fluffy little rabbit into your home, here are a few things you need to know:
Rabbits Aren’t Low-Maintenance
Contrary to popular opinion, rabbits are not “starter pets”. They require daily attention, a lot of space to run around, and regular grooming. Rabbits are intelligent animals so they need plenty of mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy.
Diet is Super Important
Rabbits need a specialized well-balanced diet, consisting of about 85% hay, 10% leafy greens, and 5% rabbit pellets. You can also give occasional treats, especially to reward good behavior. Giving your bunny a proper diet helps prevent dental disease and digestive problems.
Space to Hop
Rabbits love to stretch their legs, keeping them cramped in a cage all day is not ideal. Think of an exercise pen or you can rabbit-proof a portion of your house where your bunny can run, jump, and explore safely every day.
Bonding Takes Time
Rabbits can be very affectionate, but you must also remember that they are prey animals, hence their natural instinct is to be cautious of your every move. You’ll need a lot of patience and love to earn their trust. But, not to worry, once bonded, they’ll follow you like a shadow.
Take Vet Visits Serious
Rabbits need routine checks with the vet, they also need to be vaccinated against diseases like RVHD (Rabbits Viral Hemorrhagic Disease). In order to manage the behavior of your rabbit, you need to spay/neuter them.
Finally, Rabbits make amazing companions, but they thrive when treated with care and attention. If you're ready to commit, your bunny will reward you with lots of love, hops, and nose boops!
