How to Litter Train Your Rabbit
Because rabbits are naturally clean animals, you can easily litter train your pet if you have a little patience! Here's how to do it:
1. Pick the Right Litter Box: Choose a low-sided box (similar to a cat litter tray) that your rabbit can hop into easily; if your rabbit is a digger, a covered litter box may help contain the mess.
2. Use Rabbit-Safe Litter: Avoid clay or clumping litter (which can be dangerous if consumed); instead, use paper-based, wood-pellet, or hay-based litter; all of which are safe and absorbent
3. Place the litter box where your rabbit goes: Observe where your rabbit naturally does their business and put the litter box there. Rabbits tend to pick a favorite corner, so work with their instincts!
4. Add Hay to Encourage: Rabbits enjoy munching while they urinate. To create a pleasant environment, place fresh hay in or close to the litter box.
5. Reward Good Behavior: Every time your rabbit uses the litter box, offer them a reward or soft praise to promote the behaviour.
6. Have patience and clean often: Accidents happen! Move the droppings gently into the litter tray to remind your rabbit where to go if they miss the box. Clean the box daily to keep things fresh and odor-free.
Litter training takes consistency and patience, but once your bunny gets the hang of it, you’ll both enjoy a cleaner, happier home!
