How I learned to care for my older dog

Kukie has been by my side for 12 years. He’s been my adventure buddy, my couch companion, and my best friend. But lately, things have changed. He sleeps more, moves slower, and doesn’t get as excited about his favorite toys.

I brushed it off at first—he’s just getting older, right? But then I noticed something else. He struggled to get up after lying down, and some days, he didn’t want to go on walks at all. The worst part? He started looking at me with those tired eyes, almost as if he was saying, I need help.

A vet visit confirmed what I was afraid of—arthritis. It was manageable, but it meant medication, joint supplements, and making small changes at home. I bought a softer bed, added rugs to keep him from slipping, and even got a ramp for the car. Seeing him move with a little less pain made every effort worth it.

Aging is hard, but I’ve learned that senior dogs need just as much love and care as puppies do—just in different ways. Now, every slow walk, every gentle belly rub, and every moment together feels even more precious.

Do you have an older dog? What’s something you’ve done to make their life easier?
