The Parrot Who Waited by the Window

Every morning at exactly 7:30, Mango would perch on the edge of the window, eyes fixed on the gate. Mango wasn’t just any parrot, he was a clever, chatty little African Grey with a vocabulary of over 100 words and an obsession with toast. But what made Mango truly special was his loyalty to a little boy named Caleb.

Caleb and Mango had grown up together. From the moment Mango arrived as a feathered fluffball, Caleb treated him like a brother. They shared snacks, secrets, and stories. Caleb even taught Mango how to say, “I love you,” which Mango repeated so often, it became the soundtrack of their home.

Then one day, things changed. Caleb started school. Mango didn’t understand where his boy went. He just knew mornings became too quiet, and the hours too long. So he waited. Every day. Same time. Same window. Waiting for Caleb’s voice to echo through the gate again.

One afternoon, as Caleb’s footsteps finally crunched across the driveway, Mango screamed, “I love you!” at full volume and flapped like his wings might fall off. Caleb dropped his bag, ran inside, and they reunited like it had been years instead of hours. Mango never missed a morning after that. And when Caleb left for college years later, Mango waited again.

Different house. Same window. He never forgot. Because a parrot’s love isn’t measured by feathers or flight, but by patience, presence, and the window they return to, every single day.
