How my dog helped me through a tough time

After a tough breakup, I shut the world out. I stopped answering texts. I left the curtains drawn. I stayed in bed for days, only getting up when absolutely necessary. Everything felt heavy, like breathing itself took effort.

But Kukie noticed.

She didn’t understand heartbreak, but she understood something was wrong. Every morning, she’d climb onto the bed and rest her head on my chest. She’d nudge me with her cold nose, gently drop her leash beside me, or place her favorite toy on my blanket. It was like she was saying, “Come on. Just a little bit of outside will help.”

Some days, I ignored her. But Kukie never gave up.

Eventually, I gave in. One short walk. One deep breath.

One moment outside the sadness. Then another. And another.

She never asked for anything in return just my presence. But she gave me everything. Her quiet loyalty, her routine, and her silly little habits pulled me out when I couldn't pull myself.

People talk about therapy. And yes, I’ve done that too. But during that raw, quiet pain, Kukie was the one who got me up and moving again.

Dogs don’t need to understand our words. They understand our silence. They stay. They sit with us in the dark and patiently wait for us to step back into the light.
