Things I wish I knew before visiting Japan

Japan is incredible, but it can be overwhelming for first-timers. Here's what caught me off guard:

  • Cash is still king: many small restaurants, temples, and shops don't take cards. Always carry yen.

  • No tipping: seriously, it's considered rude. Just pay the bill and leave.

  • Shoes off everywhere: temples, homes, some restaurants, and traditional inns. Wear socks without holes.

  • Silence on trains: no phone calls, keep conversations quiet. It's a respect thing.

  • Trash cans are rare: you're expected to carry your trash until you find a bin (usually at convenience stores). Plan accordingly.

  • Learn basic phrases: 'Sumimasen' (excuse me), 'Arigato' (thank you), and 'Eigo' wakarimasu ka? (Do you speak English?) goes a long way.
