DogsWindow Birds Bring Out My Cat’s Inner Hunting Spirit
I’ve got a small bird feeder right outside my living room window, and let me tell you… It has awakened something primal in my cat.
He sits there for hours completely still except for his tail twitching like a metronome and makes these weird little “ek ek ek” noises I've never heard before. It’s like he’s calculating bird flight patterns and planning a full ambush.
It’s both adorable and slightly terrifying watching him so locked in. You’d think he was an agent on a mission.
Does anyone else’s cat do this? I’m curious, do they ever get frustrated not being able to get to the birds? Or is watching enough entertainment?

That chattering sound they make is believed to be a mix of excitement and frustration they’re trying to practice their killing bite. As long as your cat doesn’t seem overly distressed, window bird-watching is an excellent source of mental stimulation. You can even use it to inspire play get a bird-shaped toy and mimic some of the movement for indoor hunting practice.
