What is travel insurance for over 70s?
Sometimes travellers over 70 face specific challenges when taking out insurance, such as upper age limits. While standard travel insurance is available, factors like a higher likelihood of pre-existing conditions and increased risk of trip cancellations due to medical reasons can influence policy costs.
However, with our comparison tool, finding the right over 70s travel insurance is straightforward and affordable. Whether you’re looking for single or annual multi trip policies, let us help you find the perfect plan that lets you embrace your travel aspirations, no matter your age.
Why does travel insurance matter for over-70s?
Travel should be about freedom, not worrying about what could go wrong. For travellers over 70, the reality is that unexpected health issues or disruptions can have far bigger consequences without the right protection in place. Medical care abroad can quickly become overwhelming in cost, and age limits on standard policies often leave gaps where support is needed most. Travel insurance designed for over-70s acts as a safety net, stepping in when plans change, treatment is required, or assistance is needed far from home. It ensures help is available when it matters, so you can focus on enjoying the journey rather than managing risk.
Medical screening and Pre-existing conditions
It is important to let your insurer know if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or if you are awaiting the results of any medical test or diagnosis. If you do not fully disclose this, and you file a claim, you may not be eligible for coverage. Some conditions are automatically covered in a standard policy while others may be accepted after a medical screening or require a policy amendment. You may not be able to claim any medical coverage for pre-existing conditions while you’re abroad if it is excluded from your coverage. Travellers with pre-existing medical conditions are subject to certain rules, nevertheless, all of your medical issues will be covered while you travel, although these usually require premium coverage.

Single Trip Travel Insurance
This type of policy covers you for only one trip abroad and it expires after your trip is over. A single trip travel insurance policy usually comes with a maximum trip length up to 365 days.

Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance
This kind of policy allows you to make several trips both within and outside the country for a period of 12 months. However, there is a maximum duration for each trip under your coverage, usually 30 or 60 days.
What does an over-70s travel insurance policy cover?
Travel insurance for those aged 70 and above is similar to a standard policy, the only difference being that there are additional considerations for medical issues or emergencies that can result in policy exclusions such as upper age limits and higher premiums. Below is an overview of what quay’s over 70s travel insurance covers and what it doesn’t.

This optional cover protects against cruise-specific risks like medical emergencies, missed ports, lost luggage, cabin confinement, and itinerary delays—especially important for over-70 travellers, who make up around 30% of cruise passengers.

Gadget Cover
We offer additional coverage for devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones, with per-item limits to ensure your gadgets are fully protected.

Golf Cover
if you like to include sporting activities in your holiday, we offer an additional cover for golf enthusiasts. This optional add-on covers for renting golfing equipment or replacing your lost or damaged golf clubs.

How much does over-70s travel insurance cost?
Travelers over 70 usually have to pay more for their travel insurance than younger travelers and there are a number of factors that can affect the price of your premium, some of these include:
- Destination
Your destination determines the amount you pay for your travel insurance. Typically travelling outside the UK will be more expensive than vacationing within the country. Also some destinations are riskier than others.
- Trip length
The longer you travel for, the more coverage you’ll require, which will raise the price of your premium. A single trip policy costs less than an annual multi-trip policy.
- Pre-existing conditions
If you have any pre-existing conditions, we will be required to pay a higher premium. It is important that you disclose any medical condition that you have before taking out a policy
- Addition cover options
The number of additional extras that you include in your policy will determine your premium. We also offer policies with varying levels of coverage for certain groups.
